The need to accommodate Post-Panamax container vessels, a vessel class that contains nearly three times the cargo volume of the previously largest container ship, has triggered many private cargo port expansions throughout The Americas. The Panama Canal expansion project completed in 2016 particularly had a tremendous impact on the shipping industry and port systems in terms of traffic patterns, infrastructure upgrades, and other improvements to handle containerized cargo. The expanded capacity of the Panama Canal resulted in an increase of potential destinations for cargo vessels going in both directions, increasing shipping traffic volume at ports along the U.S. East Coast, the Caribbean basin, and the Gulf of Mexico.
PCG has overseen private cargo port developments throughout the region, with the deepening of navigation channels and berthing pockets often being the essential part of the construction scope of work. Risk mitigation, quality control, environmental sustainability, and CAPEX management of these capital dredging campaigns have been key focus points throughout the different project execution phases, with PCG’s emphasis being on the contractual administration of contractors, engineers, stakeholders, and other professionals involved.
Experience/Examples:
Port of Buenos Aires, Argentina (2020)
Port of Paita, Peru (2018)
Manzanillo International Terminals, Panama (2017)
Punta Catalina, Dominican Republic (2014)
Port Miami, USA (2014)
